The Panhandle - Panama City, Destin, Ft. Walton, Beaches of South Walton and Pensacola
The Northwest area of Florida, refered to as the Panhandle, is the only part of Florida that has all four seasons. Although snow is rare, they occaisionally have some flurries. Many of the cities in this area have the feel of a old southern city. On the coast, this area has beautiful, white sugar-sand beaches. Inland you will find the large live oaks creating a canopy over the roads. This area is rich in history and includes the capital city of Tallahassee. Some of the more well know areas in the Panhandle include Panama City, Destin, Ft. Walton, Beaches of South Walton and Pensacola
The Tampa Bay Area - Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and the Gulf Beaches - Clearwater Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, Redington Beach, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, and St. Pete Beach
The Tampa Bay Area, located in the west-central section of Florida is split between the city of Tampa and the beaches. Tampa, a large urban area, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has a unique cultural history. The turn of the century found this area to be home of many Cuban cigar manufacturers. This area, a National Historic Landmark District is known as Ybor City. Florida's Latin Quarter experience beckons you back to another era. Wrought iron balconies, globe streetlights, brick-lined walkways and the majestic architecture of cigar factories, social clubs and other unique buildings, provide a glimpse into an era rich with culture and history. Today, Ybor City is a shopping, dining and entertainment district where the ancient art of premium hand-rolled cigar making lives on.
On the other side of the bay are the beaches. Best known for Clearwater beach, there are actually many other wonderful beaches communities in this 35 miles of pristine shoreline. Two of America's Top Beaches for 2002 are located here.
Sarasota Bradenton Area - Anna Maria Island, Lido Key, Long Boat Key, Siesta Key and Bradenton Beach
Just below the mouth of Tampa Bay is the Sarasota Bradenton area. This area, sophisticated yet laid-back, is elegant, fun-loving and dedicated to the arts. The area surrounds a beautiful bay and swaying palm trees line quiet streets leading to diversions of live theater, world-class shopping and the white sandy beaches of sun-drenched islands that stretch along the Gulf of Mexico. On these islands, it’s a Sarasota tradition to arrive for sunset a bit early for evening walks or just to relax on beach towels. Others gather to practice juggling, ride unicycles or strum guitars. All celebrate our unexcelled views of a Matisse-bright sun melting into the sea. Because each of the islands, as well as the mainland, sports its own distinct personality, the Sarasota area offers more vacation variety than you’ve ever dreamed.
Ft. Myers Area - Sanibel and Captiva Islands
This area is along Florida’s southwestern coast, and is called the Lee Island Coast. It ranges from Boca Grande to Bonita Springs, and offers more than 50 miles of beaches famous for rare shells and calm Gulf of Mexico waters. Fort Myers has a colorful history including the winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, two famous friends who spent years as neighbors along the Caloosahatchee River. Still available for tours, the Edison Winter Home, a "old-Florida" style home, includes the laboratory and experimental gardens of one of the most inventive men who ever lived. Also on the grounds is a museum of Edison’s inventions and memorabilia.
The Florida Keys - Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Lower Keys, and Key West
The Florida Keys is a great place for a stress-free vacation. There are world-class accommodations, famous diving & fishing spots, historic attractions, superb restaurants, quaint shops, romantic weddings and unique festivals. The Keys claim some interesting facts. North America’s only living coral reef ecosystem is located just a few miles offshore of the Florida Keys. There are 42 bridges connecting the chain of Florida Keys. The longest is the famous 7-mile bridge, which is 35,716 feet long. The shortest is Harris Gap - only 37 feet long. 15% of travel time in the Keys is spent on bridges. Most travel is on the Overseas highway, which was completed in 1938 from Key Largo to Key West. Today U.S. highway 1 runs from Fort Kent, Maine to Key West, Florida.
